Summary of Mechanical pulping
KCL’s unique refining service allows you to test refining both in laboratory and pilot scales. You can promote reusability of fiber material, for example refine reject material, test recirculation or adjust fiber length. You can test new raw materials and produce material in demo scale, fibrillate with specified certain energy, homogenize or mix chemicals to the pulp. Amounts of dry material refined in lab scale are 1-2 kg and in pilot scale min 200 kg.

Summary of Chemical pulping
Chemical processing services available in pilot scale, for example extraction, washing, purifying, fractionating, bleaching and pulping.
Treatment with HC and LC reactor systems. Materials can be treated at elevated temperatures and under pressure.
Integration of customers’ equipment is possible.
HC reactor systems:
- atmospheric or closed-loop air circulation
- continuous or batch
- max temp about 90 C
- twin-screw reactor type 450 L up to 2200 L
Pressurized reactor systems:
- 4m3, up to 10 bar, max temp 180 C
- 300 L, up to 20 bar, max temp 200 C
Treatment of LC pulp
- pulper 8 m3
- several atmospheric tanks with mixing and heating

Summary of Fibre web production
Paper making at KCL can be made both in lab and pilot scale.
Laboratory-scale testing platform ideal for testing fillers, fibers or new papermaking raw-materials.
The board and papermaking methods utilize standard sheet molds or a dynamic sheet former. Dynamic sheet former is capable of producing multi-layer paper or board.
Our laboratory has a world-class portfolio of testing equipment and capabilities.

Dispersion coating scale-ups: from lab to semi-pilot and full industrial pilot scales

Summary of Milling
Simulating mill refining in laboratory scale
Our laboratory has a Voith Laboratory refiner with multiple filling options. We provide quality control and benchmarking of pulp, offer refining of various types pulps and testing of trial pulp samples using the Voith Labrefiner. We have a wide range of pulp characterization analysis.
Milling in pilot scale
Hammermill for fluff pulp testing, pre-crushing of biomass to further processing or fractionation to determined sieve size.
Atrex mill for high or low consistency (dry or wet) processing with versatile raw-material base. Atrex mill is a counter-rotating rotor-rotor mill with different filling choices from crushing, milling and dispersing. It can be used in continuous or batch process.
Crushing with crushers from Weima, either rough or fine.
Rough crusher for tearing or ripping of textiles, fine crusher for dusting.
Cutting of materials, typically cellulose or textiles is possible with our knifemill from Pallmann.
