Fraunhofer UMSICHT operates around ten pyrolysis reactors ranging from laboratory units for gram-scale experiments to large-scale plants with a throughput of up to 12 metric tons per day. The systems are suitable for bio-based feedstocks as well as plastic-containing waste streams, composite materials and mineral waste.
All reactors operate under nitrogen atmosphere in batch, semi-continuous, or automated continuous modes. Configurations can be adapted (e.g. additive dosing, catalytic pyrolysis), with operating temperatures from 350 to 1100 °C, depending on reactor type. Experimental campaigns can cover screening tests for new feedstocks through to multi-day, ton-scale trials.
The plants are generally equipped with integrated online analytics and digital control systems and can be parameterized individually, enabling precise setting and monitoring of process conditions.
