SUMMARY:Press Release 10 February 2026: Empowering the European Bioeconomy - Pilots4U\, a Gateway for Innovating Industries to Europe-Wide Bioeconomy Pilot and Demo Infrastructures
DESCRIPTION:Brussels\, February 10th\, 2026 \nThe Pilots4U community and database launches today its new platform. The Platform consists of a database of all state-of-the-art open access pilot and demonstration infrastructures across Europe\, to help companies and research institutions operating in the bioeconomy gain easier access to testing facilities that can help to bring their ideas from development to market. Furthermore\, the platform offers a program of free webinars & trainings (incl. recordings)\, access to pilot and demo facility study visits and networking events such as Pilot and Demo Infrastructure Fairs. The Pilots4U database already contains equipment profiles and contact details of 100 European pilot and demo facilities from 21 countries and is still growing week by week. The platform can be searched\, free of charge\, at www.biopilots4U.eu and is powered by COPILOT\, a Circular Bio-Based Europe Joint Undertaking CSA project. \nEurope needs a strong innovation ecosystem to compete globally\, and open access pilot and demo infrastructures are its backbone. They allow industrial users\, including SMEs\, startups and scaleups to rapidly develop\, test\, validate and scale up their new products\, and to accelerate their market uptake. However\, navigating these infrastructures can be difficult for small businesses\, who are key drivers of innovation. \nPilot and demo infrastructures face challenges in terms of visibility and accessibility. Many Start-ups & SMEs are unaware of available scale-up infrastructures or their services whereas the landscape is fragmented. These facilities are often locally or nationally siloed\, with no centralized directory encouraging cross-border access. They are also concentrated in a few regions\, limiting access for companies in less developed areas\, as well as transnational access options. \nTo answer these challenges\, the new Pilots4U platform creates an integrated and sustainable access to state-of-the-art shared pilot and demo infrastructures for the bioeconomy\, setting up cross-border access schemes for bio innovators. The goal is to foster stronger\, quicker\, more transparent\, and straightforward connections between these facilities and industry – building synergies that are essential for Europe’s future. \nThe European bioeconomy is now taking off with the successful implementation of the new Pilots4U platform that is driven by the COPILOT project. Since its creation in June 2025\, three quarters of the 120+ shared pilot and demo facilities for the bioeconomy in Europe have been published on the platform\, with another 20 in the pipeline today. \nSearching the Pilots4U Platform \nThe platform maps all available facilities across Europe\, offering detailed and up-to-date information on their equipment across 12 technology areas and 50 bioeconomy-relevant technologies. A powerful search tool allows users to filter by technology\, country\, or keyword\, and enables direct contact with technology specialists at each facility. \nIn addition\, the platform regularly hosts scale-up and training webinars in collaboration with experts from pilot and demo infrastructures that address key challenges in scale-up\, with recordings available on the platform for ongoing training. \nInfrastructures work together to provide cross-border\, multidisciplinary access to services \nBeyond its online platform\, Pilots4U also narrows the physical gap between infrastructures and innovators. A continuous programme of study visits is organized across Europe\, giving pilot and demo facilities the opportunity to open their doors to interested stakeholders. \nPilots4U also regularly hosts Pilot and Demonstration Infrastructure Fairs\, where dozens of facilities present their capabilities and services in a single venue to an audience of interested companies. \nTo find out more or to register\, visit biopilots4u.eu and join the expanding group of bioeconomy entrepreneurs in Europe. \nPress contact for Pilots4U powered by Copilot:\nStef Denayer\, Stakeholder Relations Manager Pilots4U\nStef.Denayer@bbeu.org\nTel: +32 475 82 03 00

SUMMARY:Study Visit and Scale-Up Workshop @ BEST\, Austria
DESCRIPTION:Aim of the study visit and workshop:\nThe Austrian facility BEST – Bioenergy and Sustainable Technologies GmbH is pleased to host a study visit and scale-up workshop at its location in Wieselburg. \nThe event focusses on the implementation and piloting of thermochemical technologies (pyrolysis and gasification) for the valorization of local biomass\, residues and wastes. The thermochemical treatment enables the production of energy as well as renewable carbon products (biochar\, bio-oils and gases) for different applications such as agriculture\, plastics production or metallurgy. Within a local biorefinery concept\, a wide range of raw materials and residues\, preferably at the end of cascading utilization concepts\, can be used as feedstocks. \nThese concepts are to be tested\, evaluated\, piloted and demonstrated at the GreenCarbon Lab of BEST\, whose heart consists of two pyrolysis units: a laboratory-scale rotary kiln pyrolysis reactor and a pilot-scale double auger pyrolysis unit. Research activities focus on the testing of new input materials and on the upscaling of the process to obtain GreenCarbon products (biochar\, bio-oils and gases) with defined properties. \nThe event aims to connect regional\, national and international stakeholders in the bioeconomy network. The morning session (which includes the scale-up workshop) will be followed by a study visit to GreenCarbon lab. Plenty of networking opportunities are provided within the coffee break\, walking lunch and closing session. Moreover\, the visit of the GreenCarbon Lab will be organized in smaller groups to facilitate the participants’ interactions. \nPresentations:\nBEST 02_Wopienka_BEST_company_presentation \nBEST 03_Graefe_BEST_syngas_platform \nBEST 04_Schwabl_GreenCarbonLab \nBEST 05_Schwarz_Commissioning \nBEST 06_Klauser_CircularEconomy \nBEST 07_Mathis_Biochar_Architecture \nBEST 08_Feilmayr_Biochar_Steel_industry \nVisit the BEST websiteAgenda\n9:00-9:30 – Registration \n9:30-9:45 – Introduction to “Pilots4U powered by CoPilot” Platform & Database \n9:45-10:15 – Introduction to BEST and its GreenCarbon Lab and Syngas-Platform mission \n10:15-11:00 – Pyrolysis plants for biochar production: Technology overview\, integration and commissioning challenges \n11:00-11:30 – Coffee break \n11:30-12:30– Training Session: Market Opportunities – Best practice examples \n12:30-13:15 – Walking lunch break \n13:15-14:15 – Study visit: GreenCarbon Lab infrastructure \nFrom 14:15 onwards – Closing remarks\, feedback survey and open networking\, \nTarget audience\nAll bioeconomy stakeholders\, where possible with a focus on BioInnovators (Technology Owners). \nContact: \nManuel Schwabl\, manuel.schwabl@best-research.eu\nElisa Carlon\, elisa.carlon@best-research.eu \nSatellite events The ProteInn Club Industrial Sounding Board Meeting\nThe ProteInn Club is a collaboration between Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant\, Ghent University\, the Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture\, Fisheries\, and Food (ILVO)\, and CAPTURE.
